Sometimes it’s easier to start with someone beside you.

Starting at a gym can feel daunting. You might not know where to begin. You might worry about looking out of place or not knowing how things work. Or perhaps you’ve tried before but found it difficult to keep going.
Sometimes what makes the difference isn’t more information or a complicated fitness programme. It’s simply having someone there.
Gym Buddy is designed to provide that connection.
A volunteer Gym Buddy can meet you at the gym they already use, go in with you and exercise alongside you while you become familiar with the environment and start building your own routine.
The aim isn’t for you to need a Buddy forever. The aim is to help you reach the point where you don’t need one.
Gym Buddy connects people who would like some support getting started at the gym with volunteer gym-goers willing to accompany them while they build confidence.
No judgement. No pressure. Just someone willing to walk through the door with you.
Gym Buddy

How It Works
1. INTRODUCE
We connect you with a suitable local Gym Buddy whose gym has agreed to support the programme.
2. ACCOMPANY
Your Buddy meets you at the gym and attends sessions with you, so you don’t have to take those first steps alone.
3. ENCOURAGE
Your Buddy provides friendly encouragement and helps you become familiar with the gym environment.
4. BUILD CONFIDENCE
As the gym becomes more familiar, you begin doing more for yourself and finding the routine that works for you.
5. ESTABLISH A ROUTINE
The focus gradually shifts towards attending confidently and making physical activity part of your own routine.
6. STEP BACK
When you’re ready, your Buddy steps back and you continue independently.
FROM SUPPORTED TO INDEPENDENT
What a Gym Buddy is
A Gym Buddy isn’t there to tell you how fit you should be or what you should look like.
They’re an ordinary gym-goer volunteering some of their time to help somebody else feel more comfortable getting started.
A Gym Buddy can:
• Meet you at the gym so you don’t have to arrive alone.
• Go in and exercise alongside you during your first sessions.
• Help you become familiar with the environment and the practicalities of attending a gym.
• Offer encouragement when everything still feels unfamiliar.
• Help you build confidence until attending starts to feel normal.
And, eventually:
Step back.
Because success for a Gym Buddy isn’t creating dependence. It’s helping somebody develop the confidence to continue without them.
What a Gym Buddy isn’t
Support — not professional advice.
Gym Buddies are volunteers, not healthcare professionals, counsellors or personal trainers.
Unless they separately hold relevant professional qualifications, a Gym Buddy does not provide:
• Personal training or individual exercise programmes
• Medical or healthcare advice
• Mental-health counselling or therapy
• Nutritional advice
• Addiction treatment or recovery services
Community Strength Network is designed to complement existing professional and community support, not replace it.
Where someone needs specialist support, the appropriate qualified professional or service remains the right place to get it.
Who is Gym Buddy for?
You don’t need to have a particular diagnosis, background or reason for finding the gym difficult.
Gym Buddy could be for you if you:
- want to become more active but aren’t confident about going to a gym alone
- feel intimidated or out of place in a gym environment
- would find it easier to start with some friendly support
- are returning to exercise after time away
- have been encouraged to become more active but aren’t sure how to take that first step
- simply think having someone beside you would make starting easier
You don’t need to prove that you need help. If having someone beside you would make it easier to start, that’s reason enough.
Becoming a Gym Buddy
Could you help someone else take their first step?
You don’t need to be the strongest person in the gym. You don’t need to be a personal trainer. And you certainly don’t need to have all the answers.
What matters is that you’re comfortable in a gym environment and willing to give some of your time to help someone who isn’t.
Being a Gym Buddy is about being:
Welcoming. Reliable. Patient. Encouraging. Non-judgemental.
You might meet someone who hasn’t exercised for years. Someone who is nervous about walking through the door. Someone who simply doesn’t know where to start.
Your role isn’t to transform them….. It’s to be there while they begin transforming things for themselves.
A short-term helping hand
Gym Buddy isn’t intended to create a permanent one-to-one relationship. For the initial pilot, we envisage support taking place over approximately 4–8 weeks, depending on the individual and how their confidence develops.
As the participant becomes more comfortable, the Buddy gradually steps back. Some people may be ready sooner. Others may benefit from a little longer.
The destination is the same: confidence. Routine. Independence.
And maybe one day…
Today’s participant could be tomorrow’s Buddy. Someone who once needed another person to walk through the gym door with them may eventually become the person willing to do that for somebody else.
That’s how we hope Community Strength Network grows — not simply by helping more people use gyms, but by creating a community in which people support one another to take that first step.
